In memory of Sandy Wummer, HCCA Member and Corporate
Director of Compliance for Caron Treatment Centers
(1956 — 2017)
It’s not every day that you hear good-natured compliance barbs at a memorial service, but Sandy Wummer had such a joyful sense of
humor that they were fitting. The first speaker
shared his recollection of Sandy’s ever-present
smile and how she would throw back her head in
a heartfelt laugh.
Sandy’s colleagues, at Caron facilities in
both Pennsylvania and Florida, requested a
remembrance opportunity following Sandy’s
untimely death in a motor vehicle accident on
September 27. They lauded her integrity and
described her as available, accessible, compassionate, and kind. The CEO of Caron, Doug Tieman,
recalled Sandy’s 25 years of service to Caron and
noted that Sandy’s dedicated work had resulted in
Caron becoming one of the first Recovery facilities to earn accreditation by the Commission on
Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).
After attending a Compliance Institute,
many of us distill our learnings into key
takeaways to present to our audit and compli-
ance committees and/or boards of directors.
The key takeaways from the Celebration of Life
for Sandy were:
· Be a mentor and a trusted advisor.
· Be as nice to a housekeeper as you are to a
· Don’t wait to tell your valued employees
and colleagues how important they are and
how much you appreciate what they do.
· Live with integrity.
Perhaps the highest compliment that a
compliance professional can receive was paid
to Sandy in a story told by Caron’s Director of
Spiritual Care. He recalled a difficult situation
with his supervisor, involving a proposed action
that he thought was a very bad idea. Mustering
his courage for the conversation, he expressed
his concerns and added what he called some
“Sandy leverage” (“I don’t think it’s a good idea and
I don’t think that Sandy will, either.”) The supervisor agreed and withdrew the original request.
May we all strive to leave such an impressive legacy and earn the honor of “[fill in your
name] leverage” in assisting colleagues to
defend what they know to be right.
